Jonathan spoke about how he started out in the industry, and the incredible path his life has taken. Looking at his collections these days, you would never guess what design propelled him into the mega sphere of furniture design he is at now. A simple, clean lined, extremely contemporary sofa, far from the detailed carving and marquetry that he is known for today.
Jonathan’s design sense is one you don’t find too often any more in furniture design. He believes, in a world of Ikeas and Pottery Barns, that the skill set of furniture makers is something to be harnessed and cultivated. The beauty and craftsmanship in his furniture is unlike that of any other.
A few of the skills he not only applies in his designs, but is also proficient at are eglomise and marquetry. Eglomise is the process of painting or applying gold leaf to the back side of a piece of glass, a quite exquisite effect. Marquetry is a painstakingly skilled process where one carves veneer in duo tones to create decorative patterns, also breath taking.
Thank you again to Jonathan for sharing his story here at Sedlak’s!
